FES Wayfinding
Project
Project Background
Sustainable Frenchtown’s (SF) most unique effort this year is a partnership with Frenchtown Elementary School (FES) for a creative wayfinding project funded by a $10,000 grant from Sustainable Jersey for Schools & the NJ Education Association. This first-of-its-kind project has been in the works for months and is now coming to fruition.

Kid-Sourced Elements!
Students are picking the key places in our community that will ultimately end up on this wayfinding gateway. Each grade's class selects at least 10 locations for consideration. Also, each student is asked to contribute a "found" object from Frenchtown that can be integrated into the art on the wayfinding structure.
Project Timeline
It is hoped that the wayfinding structure will be completed by the end of 2022 and installed in the Spring of 2023.

Working With FES & Modern Fossils
SF partnered with the Green Team from FES and Frenchtown-based artists at Modern Fossils to design a large wayfinding gateway to be built in the front yard of the school grounds using locally-found (recycled and reused) objects on a structure that mimics the look of our Frenchtown bridge over the Delaware River. SF and Modern Fossils already presented the project concept and process to all FES grades during two assemblies in early September.
Community Engagement
Once we learn what all of the grades think, there will be an online survey of the broader school community to prioritize which Frenchtown places should go on the signs.

What is Wayfinding?
Literally "wayfinding" just means something that helps people find their way. In this case, an artistic structure designed to emulate the feel of our Frenchtown Bridge will be built and embellished by found object/recycled art, solar lighting (and other features) and a series of arrow signs that point to key places in Frenchtown Borough, harkening back to the days before mobile phones and online maps.
